Nintendo Switch 2: One Big Problem

Less than 48 hours ago, Nintendo finally revealed its new Switch 2. Reminder, the first Switch came out almost 8 years ago! The astonishing thing is, despite many people making fun of Nintendo and their games, and despite the Switch proceeding the PS4 by 4 years, it still outsold both it and the Xbox One!

You see, Nintendo has an advantage. Its range of purely exclusive games is unfathomable; this company built itself by making its own games. Compare this to its Sony and Microsoft counterparts: they can barely make exclusive games on their own. For example, out of the ten most played games on the Xbox, not a single one of them is an exclusive. This is also the case for PlayStation. Despite the Switch being unable to run more than half of the games on these modern consoles, it still continues to outsell them! In 2023 alone, the Switch sold nearly 5 million units, even after 6 years. The craze is less about the numbers and more about how a console that is so technically inferior could outsell the giants.

Now, Nintendo revealed the Switch 2 less than two days ago, and it has, of course, taken the world by storm. Unfortunately, hardware wise, we know just as much as we did before the reveal, hahaha... We did, however, finally get its official design.

This design has been met with controversy, as many miss the original Switch's colorful joy-cons. What do you think?

Although we don't have official information on internal specs, leakers are verrrry good at leaking. The Switch 2 is rumored to have Nvidia's Tegra T239 processor, which basically means its now on par with the PlayStation 4's performance. However, seeing that they have chosen Nvidia to supply them chips, there is probably some secret AI-upscaling business going on. Some say the Switch 2 will use machine learning in order to upscale all the way up to 4K. Obviously, these wouldn't be real Ks just artificially generated ones that fool you enough to think they are real.

The Big Problem

PlayStation and Xbox are suffering, and this is evident from the fact that both of them are opening up to each other. Sony is bringing their exclusives to PCs, and Microsoft is bringing their exclusives to Sony; they need each other. They need each other because they can't match the demand for games on their own. They need to depend on other platforms to sell more games. Even though this might end up technically making them more money, why would anyone buy these consoles anymore? With capable PCs becoming cheaper and consoles having less exclusivity to offer, buying the latter almost feels like a waste of money. Sony and Microsoft are in an unescapable dilemma: they need each other to make money, but helping each other is what will cause their downfall. Nintendo, on the other hand, feasts as it depends on nobody, except itself. Nintendo's independence in game development will make both the giants deeply reconsider their position in the market; there's a reason why Sony is reportedly working on its own handheld. Thus, while everyone crumbles, Nintendo's still up and standing.
